Missionary to LCC
Fredene G Bishop
Fredene Bishop is a strong woman whose faith has been passed along to her for a generation. Raised in humble circumstances by her grandmother in Barbados along with two older brothers, Fredene was rich in spiritual experience and understanding. This challenging beginning gave Fredene the environment in which God grew her heart of empathy and compassion for others.
Fredene’s missionary life began with discipleship training on the campus of Mercy Ships, an international Christian organization whose mission was to bring Hope and Healing to the poorest of the poor in Africa. She embarked on her first outreach program in Nicaragua, and then later to the Dominican Republic. At the age of 57 she would carry out mission trips for Mercy Ships in Africa (2-4 months in duration), covering the countries of Ghana, Togo, Liberia and Benin. By God’s grace, Fredene’s employer Walmart Stores was always supportive in giving her the requisite leaves of absences. From 2004 to 2008, she was able to make two shorter trips to Uganda on the east coast of Africa for the charity, Watoto Orphanage. This intensive travelling began to take its toll on her life so she changed the focus from Africa to Central America. She teamed up with Phil and Judy Bergen in “Love Guatemala” for the ensuing seven years, where she carried out eight forays into Guatemala as mission team coordinator. Fredene’s passion for missions work never seems too slow down, for even on her annual vacation this year in Barbados she felt compelled to assist the Methodist ‘s church lone mission worker in a campaign to enlist more church members to support this mission worker.
